The Raise I Asked For In Amber

On soft power, a very hard conversation, and why the season's richest jewelry tones were made for negotiating.

I rehearsed the number in the shower, then in the elevator, then once more in the reflection of a stairwell door, which is where a woman does her most honest work. What I did not rehearse was my wrist. That I decided at the last second, standing in front of the mirror with four minutes to spare: the warm amber stack, the one that looks like late afternoon light caught in resin. Not because it was strategic. Because I wanted to walk into that room feeling like the most expensive version of myself, and amber has always known how to do that quietly.

The conversation went the way these conversations go, which is to say it went better than my stomach predicted and worse than my shower. But I want to tell you about the wrist, because I've been thinking about it all week.

Trend Report

Fall's jewelry story is, for once, wonderfully on-message. Jewelers are calling out heavy yellow gold, sculptural cuffs, and mixed-metal bangle stacks as the season's defining wristwear, with silver finally getting its due next to gold rather than in opposition to it. The advice running through nearly every fall roundup is some version of editing down to amplify up: fewer pieces, more presence, nothing apologetic about the volume.

And then there's the color. Amber, citrine, garnet, and deep topaz are the moody gemstones of the moment, set in warm gold, joined on the runways by mahogany red, chocolate brown, and a surprising, welcome turn of ocean blue. Wooden bangles and bold enamel are layering in too, which tells you the mood is less "careful" and more "I have somewhere to be, and I look good getting there." Warm tones for the boardroom, cool water for the weekend. I find that division of labor deeply sensible.

And I couldn't help but wonder: if softness is a weakness, why does it take so much strength to wear it to work?

This Week's Stacks

Four stacks for four rooms: the one where you ask, the one where you decompress, the one where you hold your ground, and the one where you celebrate afterward.

Career & Confidence

Here is the thing nobody says out loud in the performance-review economy: femininity is still treated as a thing you have to earn the right to wear. Dress soft and you're asked to prove you're serious. Dress severe and you're asked to prove you're warm. The loophole, I've decided, is to stop auditioning for either verdict and simply arrive as the whole woman, details intact.

My bangles are details intact. They announce me a half-second before I speak, which gives the room time to adjust its posture. I don't think of that as vanity. I think of it as lighting, the quiet professional art of making sure the right person is visible before the conversation begins. Rich metal, warm stone, and the unmistakable sound of a woman who is not planning to shrink.

Lifestyle Edit

After the meeting I did not go back to my desk. I took myself to lunch, ordered the thing with too much butter, and let my wrist rest on the table next to a glass of something cold. Elevating your life is rarely a grand gesture. It's the discipline of marking the hard thing as important, then rewarding yourself for walking through it. A good stack is a small, daily proof that you take your own days seriously.

As for the raise: I'll tell you when there's something to tell. Let's just say I'm not returning the amber.

Walk in already wearing the answer.
